THE ANCIENT LANDSCAPE OF CORNWALL 2

Linking two stunning sacred sites in Cornwall, Boscawen’Un stone circle and the cliffs of Carn Les Boel, this pilgrimage is the second of a series through the ancient landscapes of Cornwall. Meet at Sancreed House at 12 noon. Bring a picnic and walking boots. Distance 3 miles, moderate grade with a little climbing.

THE ANCIENT LANDSCAPE OF CORNWALL 3 - ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT

Travel to St Michael’s Mount for the Michaelmas service in the castle chapel, and visit the site of the apparition of St Michael in 495AD; picnic lunch, then travel by car to Chapel Carn Brea near Lands End. Bring wet weather gear, walking boots, packed lunch and money for boat. Meet 9.30am in Penzance.

EAST ANGLIA

This area south of Beccles and the River Waveney is rich in medieval churches, dedicated to different saints who have given their names to the villages. It is on the Michael and Mary lines, with an early Bronze Age site at Flixton. This walk includes a visit to the remains of an eleventh century Minster.

‘Michael and Mary lines: Further into the landscape’. Travelling eastward along the leys from Bury St Edmunds, encompassing sacred tracks between Stowlangtoft and Pakenham.

An initiatic pilgrimage around the landscaped grounds of Audley End, a Jacobean palace, built on the site of a Benedictine monastery.

Enjoy the daffodils, and then follow the River Brerachan up the glacial valley, overlooked by crags and moraines carved in the Ice Age We will trace the energy line from the Straloch standing stone to a seldom-visited cup-marked rock. Meet at Straloch House at 10.15am. Bring a picnic and walking boots. Distance 3 miles, easy grade.

From the Millenium Wood down to the island on the loch, across the wild-flowery meadows with orchids, and down the river to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’. Make a midsummer mandala, and see how careful management of grazing and woodland benefits wildlife and native rengeration. Meet at Straloch House at 10.15am. Bring a picnic and walking boots. Distance 3 miles, easy grade.

LANCASHIRE

LINCOLNSHIRE

An exploration North Lincolnshire, including the Alkborough Maze, and the dragon of Dragonby, a 90ft stone iron-age fire-breathing beast who guards the earliest iron works in Britain. Meet 12noon for lunch, a short talk and exploration of both sites. Walking distance is about 1 mile, with a 10 mile drive between sites.

This pilgrimage will start with a talk about London’s sacred river, the Fleet, which was said to fall ‘from a higher grace than any of its sister streams’. We will visit the sources of the Fleet and follow the course of the river, detailing the many wells and healing spas that used to thrive along its course, including the 18th Century water temple at Kenwood, where we will taste its chalybeate waters. We finish on Parliament Hill with an overview of the whole Fleet River system as it flows to the Thames below. Aidan Dun will share his understanding of the sacred landscape of London, the subject of his epic poem ‘Vale Royale’. Meet at 1pm at the cloister at Kenwood House. This walk will complement and inform Anthony’s presentation at the Winter Conference 2008.

This pilgrimage will excplore a key alignment through the City of London, from the Leadenhall Markets to St Paul’s Cathedral, crossing the valley of the Fleet and on to the Ludgate. Meet 2pm in the centre of Leadenhall Markets. This walk will complement and inform Anthony’s presentation at the Winter Conference 2008.

SCOTTISH BORDERS

Pilgrimages in the beautiful Eildon Hills, along the beginning of St Cuthbert’s Way to Lindisfarne. Wonderful views of the Border countryside and visits to the Cistercian Melrose Abbey, dedicated to St Mary.

Cley Hill, Wiltshire

We honour our ancestors through silent walk, and celebration at the top with spontaneous mandala creation, rhythm and sound. As the alta major point of the Wessex landscape temple, it is a receptive area for higher guidance, and connects with the visualisation at the ‘third eye’ landscape of Avebury-Marlborough-Stonehenge. Meet at the car-park at 11am, bring picnic and be prepared for a steep hill walk of 20 minutes.

When booking any pilgrimage, it is essential that you are open and clear about your level of fitness, so that suitable arrangements can be made if needed.  Pilgrimages are flexible and usually can be adapted to include all levels of fitness, but it is ESSENTIAL that you inform the organiser at least a week ahead of the time of the pilgrimage. People coming on pilgrimages do so at their own risk and The Gatekeeper Trust cannot be held liable for those who come under-equipped, inappropriately dressed, or who take unnecessary risks.
